The Alberto Villegas Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of an outstanding librarian who dedicated his professional career serving Hispanics in El Paso, Texas. Beto, as he was called by friends and family, was a member of the first class of the Graduate Library Institute for Spanish American (GLISA) created by Dr. Arnulfo Trejo at the University of Arizona in 1975. Upon his graduation and inspired by the GLISA missionary zeal of improving library services to Hispanic population in the United States, he returned to El Paso to serve the community he so strongly loved. During his professional career he worked as audiovisual librarian at El Paso Public Library, school librarian at the Ysleta Independent School District, but it was at El Paso Community College Library where he found his niche.

As a Public Services Librarian, at EPCC, Beto was service-oriented, courteous and resourceful in helping students at the reference desk. His leadership skills became evident when he took the helm of the Transmountain Campus Library. His sound and objective judgment and his savvy budgetary skills made TM Library the leader in collection development for the entire college system.

Beto was a founding member of the El Paso Chapter of REFORMA and participated actively in all the Chapter activities.  Many years ago the Chapter organized the Serenata musical group that played for Dia de las Madres to celebrate Mother’s day. Beto closed the serenade by giving a warm hug, a red rose and a soft kiss on the cheek to the surprised mothers!

As a testament to Beto’s legacy, the REFORMA EDUCATION FOUNDATION has created a commemorative scholarship in his name. The Alberto Villegas Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates a strong inclination in working in a community college library in the Southwest. The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded annually at the REF Scholarship fundraising event during the ALA summer conference.

Check donations towards this scholarship can be send to REFORMA Educational Foundation to the attention of Sol Lopez, Treasurer at P.O. Box 973365, El PasoTexas-79997-2763.
